Many government and opposition officials were present at the ceremonial parade to celebrate the country’s 28th anniversary of Independence at the Antigua Recreation Grounds (ARG) yesterday.
Those in attendance at the 8:00 AM ceremony included Governor General Dame Louise Lake-Tack and Prime Minister Baldwin Spencer, Speaker of the House D Gisele Isaac-Arrindell, President of the Senate Hazlyn Francis, Education Minister Dr Jacqui Quinn-Leandro, Minister of Tourism John Maginley, Minister of Health Willmoth Daniel, and Finance Minister Harold Lovell. Culture Minister Eleston Adams, Minister of State in the Ministry of Education, Sports & Youth, Senator Winston Williams, and Minister of State for Agriculture, Lands & Housing, Chanlah Codrington.
As promised, leader of the opposition, Antigua Labour Party, Lester Bird, was also in attendance. He was joined by opposition MPs Gaston Browne and Eustace Lake and senators Gail Christian and Chet Greene.
The proceedings started promptly with several uniformed groups entering the grounds and ‘marching on’ to the field from 7:30 AM. These included the Girl Guides Association, the Antigua & Barbuda Defense Force, the Coast Guard, the Royal Police Force of Antigua & Barbuda and the Seventh Day Adventist Pathfinders. With officials in place, the governor general performed an Inspection of the Parade, flanked by officers from the Royal Police Force of Antigua & Barbuda, while the Defense Force Band serenaded the audience with a medley of patriotic songs.
